About the Burning River Roller Girls
Who are the BRRG?
The Burning River Roller Girls are Cleveland’s first all-female, skater-owned, flat-track derby league. We follow the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) rules and regulations, including how bouts are run, the size of the track, our equipment, and so forth.
What is roller derby?
For a super nifty and complete description, visit the roller derby definition at How Stuff Works; for now, though, here are the basics:
There are three positions, jammer (who does the fast skating and the scoring), the blocker (who blocks the other team’s jammer), and the pivot (who skating at the front of the pack and can take over the jammer position). Each team has 5 girls skating, and the combination of both teams’ blockers and pivots is called the “pack.”
The pack starts skating on the first whistle and the jammers take off on the 2nd whistle. The jammers have to clear the pack and then lap the pack, at which point, the jammers score points for each girl on the opposing team she passes.
Who are the BoD and coaches?
The BRRG Board of Directors makes sure this whole league runs smoothly. There are several BoD members whose responsibilities cover everything from how our information is publicized to how our skaters get along with one another. We wouldn't be where we are today without their vision and committment.
The BRRG coaches make our skaters strong and powerful! They run practices, teach us how to fall (and how to avoid falling!), make sure we're hydrated and motivated and generally ready to whoop some ass.
